Vendicari Nature Reserve: Sea, History and Unspoilt Nature
Just 20 minutes from Villa Aroi, the Vendicari Nature Reserve stretches along the coast, offering one of the most fascinating and unspoilt landscapes in eastern Sicily.
A beautiful mosaic of sea, cliffs, dunes and ancient ruins, this protected area is a place where nature still takes centre stage and every season brings its own colours.
A Natural Paradise in the Heart of South-Eastern Sicily
The Vendicari Nature Reserve lies between Noto and Marzamemi, along approximately 7 km of coastline. It is a protected area with a remarkable variety of ecosystems, including wetlands, golden beaches, rocky cliffs and Mediterranean scrub.
It is ideal for anyone who enjoys walking in nature, watching migratory birds and swimming in the sea away from the crowds.
Tip: Bring water, comfortable walking shoes and a hat. There are no beach resorts inside the reserve, just unspoilt nature.
In winter, you may spot pink flamingos, herons and storks. In spring and summer, the reserve fills with the scents of thyme, mastic and wild capers.
The Beaches of Vendicari
The reserve is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in eastern Sicily, all accessible on foot via sandy paths.
Calamosche – the most famous beach, a secluded bay nestled between two headlands, perfect for swimming in calm, crystal-clear waters.
Eloro – located at the northern entrance to the reserve, it offers fine sand and clear water, making it a good choice for families too.
Vendicari – the main beach, next to the remains of the old tuna fishery, where you can combine a swim in the sea with a glimpse into local history.
The Tonnara and the Swabian Tower
Within the reserve lie the evocative remains of the Vendicari Tonnara, an old tuna fishery, and the Swabian Tower, both dating back to the 15th century.
These historic structures overlook the coastal landscape and tell the story of the area’s long maritime tradition.
From the Swabian Tower, you can enjoy spectacular sea views, especially when the clouds reflect the colours of the sunset.
Birdwatching and Photography
Vendicari is a paradise for birdwatching enthusiasts. Along the trails, observation hides offer the chance to spot flamingos, black-winged stilts, spoonbills and many other bird species.
The golden afternoon light also makes the reserve a wonderful place for nature photography.
